It’s easy to fall in love with wallpaper the moment you set eyes on a beautiful print or texture. It’s something that can offer a unique style which has a significant impact on your room. But if you find yourself getting tired of its bold pattern, can you just paint over it? Well, there are a few rules that painters and decorators Colwyn bay want to share with you…

If it’s not textured – If your wallpaper isn’t going to add any value to your paintwork, you should always consider removing it. Otherwise, you will for years after be living with the paper separation lines running down your walls which will become very obvious once painted. What’s more, any dirt or oil exposed to the paper over the years will eventually saturate through the paint, leaving it patchy in places. If you’re concerned about uneven walls as a result, you can ask your decorator whether they can skim coat your walls for a smooth and even base to start fresh.

If it’s textured – If you really like the textured pattern on your paper and you can see that it’s been well looked after, there’s no reason why you can’t paint over your paper providing it meets a certain standard. Be sure to investigate whether someone hasn’t made the mistake of double wallpapering in the past (before you moved into the property, for example). Also check that the wallpaper has been laid very flat using thicker, quality paper. When you paint over poor quality paper, you do risk causing it to bubble and no matter how much you spend on your paint, bubbled paper will tarnish a quality look and finish. If you’re unsure, you should always seek advice from a professional painter who has the experience to know what kind of outcome you can expect.

It’s important to consider how you plan to use the space in future.  If you are planning to move out of your home for example, it makes sense that you might not want to invest too much time in stripping walls when you know that new occupants will most likely want to redecorate to their tastes. On the other hand, if you’re planning in using the space for years to come and want a superior quality finish, it may be better for you to start fresh with your walls.
