You might be thinking it’s time to freshen up your room but don’t want to spend more money on furnishings to get a perfectly coordinated room. Painting contractors Denbighshire share their tips to freshen up your room without having to splurge on all-new interiors to match.

When you’re looking to freshen up your room without the big spend, many think you have to stick rigorously to the same colour palette, only to shift up or down a shade. This isn’t the case, and you’re unlikely to get that revived feel in the room by doing this. The key is to understand your colour and work with its undertones.

A cooler undertone will use more blue hues whilst a warmer undertone will use oranges and pinks.  Both cooler and warmer tones can be found on opposite ends of the colour wheel, and should be used as a guide to help you choose a new colour for your room. If your furnishings use a cool undertone, you could now use any other cool colour on the colour wheel. For example, if you have grey or mink colour furnishings, blues, lilacs and sage colours could work very nicely.  Try a variety of swatches to find out what colours work best in your room. What might look good in one room might not look right in another due to the light and shape in the room.

Decorators often use this trick to manipulate the style of the room and create pops of colour when they don’t necessarily want to coordinate colour. They simply choose an opposite on the colour wheel to attract the eye to certain items in your room.

Now you know what tone is right for you; you can go ahead and select your colour. Perhaps you want to tie in your furnishings further? Well, it’s easily done with a few simple decorative pieces. Adding candle holders, picture frames and cushions that match your wall paint is a way to complete the look.

Sometimes if you’re looking to create a broader colour scheme, you might want to add more variety of cooler and warmer shades which can add a bit more depth to your palette. To strengthen your palette in a lighter room, add deeper tones. To open up your room, add lighter tones both in your paint and decorations to reflect light.
